Good morning, blog readers, from cloudy and cool (31 degrees) Wisconsin where, on my morning walk, I saw: 2 deer and a bunny!
This headline, from the AP, caught my eye this morning: “Skyscraper-size asteroid will buzz Earth on Friday (today), safely passing within 1.7 million miles.”
In the article, the AP staff reported: “Don’t worry: There’s no chance of it hitting us since it will pass seven times the distance from Earth to the moon.
NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies estimates the space rock is between 690 feet (210 meters and 480 meters across. That means the asteroid could be similar in size to New York City’s Empire State Building or Chicago’s Willis Tower. Discovered in 2008, the asteroid is designated as 2008 OS7. It won’t be back again until 2032, but it will be a much more distant encounter, staying 45 million miles (72 million kilometers) away.
The harmless flyby is one of several encounters this week. Three much smaller asteroids also will harmlessly buzz Earth on Friday (today), no more than tens of yards across, with another two on Saturday. On Sunday, an asteroid roughly the size of 2008 OS7 will swing by, staying 4.5million miles (7.3 million kilometers) away.”
Now, as I (Doug) have said before, there are two missing words in these calculations: “Lord willing!” Referring to Christ in Colossians 1:15-17, Paul wrote: “He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things have been created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
In other words, it is nothing for Christ to keep an asteroid away or for Him to move an asteroid to hit the earth. Read Revelation 6:12-14 to see what I mean. Note: “He” in verses12-14 is Jesus. And so, based on the Word of God, I say, “Lord willing, these asteroids will miss the earth.”
I find it interesting that, over the last few days, I have been writing about “signs in the sun, the moon and the stars” which Jesus said would occur before His return in Luke 21: 25-28. He also told His disciples, in Mark 13:33, 35, 37, to “stay on the alert” which we can do by watching, waiting, working, witnessing for, walking with and worshiping Jesus until He comes. And, if you are not a believer in Jesus, you can become one today, even right now, by simply agreeing with God you are a sinner who needs a Savior Who is Jesus (Romans 3:23, 24) and believe He died on a cross for your sins, was buried and raised from the dead (I Corinthians 15:1-4) to forgive all your sins and give you eternal life (John 3:16). And, if you do, I’ll see you in heaven! Love, Doug (2/2/24)
